3,700 homes destroyed in Baga as Amnesty Int'l release satellite images from attack
Amnesty International has released satellite images from the
January 2nd and 7th Boko Haram attack in Baga Borno state. Early
reports put the death toll from the attack at 2000 but that has been disputed by the Nigerian
military who put the death toll at 150.
According to a report carried out by AI's Nigeria researcher, Daniel Eyre, about 3,700 homes in two villages, Baga and Doron Baga were destroyed by the militants. The report claims that of all the Boko Haram attacks, the one carried out in Baga last week is so far the deadliest. Continue...
Continue...
“The Satellite images released by Amnesty International on Wednesday provides indisputable and shocking evidence of the scale of last week’s attack on the towns of Baga and Doron Baga by Boko Haram militants. Before and after images of two neighbouring towns, Baga (160 kilometres from Maiduguri) and Doron Baga (also known as Doro Gowon, 2.5 km from Baga), taken on 2 and 7 January show the devastating effect of the attacks which left over 3,700 structures damaged or completely destroyed. Other nearby towns and villages were also attacked over this period. These detailed images show devastation of catastrophic proportions in two towns, one of which was almost wiped off the map in the space of four days. Of all Boko Haram assaults analyzed by Amnesty International, this is the largest and most destructive yet. It represents a deliberate attack on civilians whose homes, clinics and schools are now burnt out ruins. The analysis shows just two of the many towns and villages that fell victim to a series of Boko Haram attacks which began on 3 January 2015. In Baga, a densely populated town less than two square kilometres in size, approximately 620 structures were damaged or completely destroyed by fire. In Doron Baga over 3,100 structures were damaged or destroyed by fire affecting most of the four square kilometre town. Many of the wooden fishing boats along the shoreline, visible in the images taken on the 2 January, are no longer present in the 7 January images tallying with eye witnesses’ testimony that desperate residents fled by boat across Lake Chad. Thousands of people have fled the violence across the border to Chad and to other parts of Nigeria including Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. These people are adding to the hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people and refugees, who have already stretched the capacity of host communities and government authorities" the report said
The report included accounts of some villagers who gave accounts about the attack. One man who was interviewed said he saw a woman who was in labor attacked and killed with her unborn child ripped from her stomach
"Half of the baby boy is out and she died like this"the man said
Another said “They killed so many people. I saw maybe around 100 killed at that time in Baga. I ran to the bush. As we were running, they were shooting and killing.”he said
Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to take all possible legal steps to restore security in the north-east and ensure protections of civilians.
“Up until now, the isolation of the Baga combined with the fact that Boko Haram remains in control of the area has meant that it has been very difficult to verify what happened there. Residents have not been able to return to bury the dead, let alone count their number. But through these satellite images combined with graphic testimonies a picture of what is likely to be Boko Haram’s deadliest attack ever is becoming clearer. This week, Nigeria’s Director of Defence Information stated that the number of people killed in Baga including Boko Haram fighters “has so far not exceeded about 150. These images, together with the stories of those who survived the attack, suggest that the final death toll could be much higher than this figure.” the report says

Where do Billionaires go to School?
Are the super-rich more likely to be better
educated? Or have they spurned scholarship and dedicated themselves to
the serious business of being seriously rich?
According to a global census of dollar billionaires, almost two-thirds have a university degree. That means that even for countries with a high level of graduates, billionaires are disproportionately likely to have gone to university.
In the UK, more than four out of five billionaires were in higher education – not so much rags to riches as rag week to riches.
The educational insights are from an annual profile of the uber-rich, the Wealth-X and UBS Billionaire Census, produced by the Swiss banking group and a Singapore-based financial intelligence firm.
It examines the wealth and background of more than 2,300 billionaires – and the findings undermine the image of the wealthy as being self-taught self-starters trained on the market stall.
As well as being much more likely to be graduates, a quarter have postgraduate degrees and more than one in 10 has a doctorate.
This map of wealth also shows that these dollar billionaires – worth at least £620m and typically more than three times this amount – are likely to have attended some of the traditionally most prestigious universities.
The top 20 for universities producing billionaires is dominated by blue-chip, elite US institutions, which take 16 of the places.
Elite institutions
The University of Pennsylvania has produced more than any other institution, followed by Harvard, Yale, the University of Southern California, Princeton, Cornell and Stanford.
And the most likely way of making money is by dealing in money, with billionaires mostly making their fortunes through finance, banking and investment.
University of Pennsylvania has produced the most billionaires
But there are also some indications that the geography of the super rich is changing. Reflecting India’s growing economy, the University of Mumbai is in ninth place in the league table.
The only UK university in this wealth list is the London School of Economics, in 10th place, with no place for Oxford or Cambridge.
The rise of Russia’s wealthy is reflected in the 11th place for Lomonosov Moscow State University.
But the dominance of the US universities is not simply about the US producing more billionaires. More than a quarter of the billionaires who attended US universities to take undergraduate degrees were from other countries.
This was even more the case for postgraduate courses in the US, where 39% came from overseas.
There could also be something of a time-lag, because the average age of this group is 63, attending the university systems of four decades ago.
University donations
The connection with university carries into later life. More than half of billionaires are involved in philanthropic projects and the biggest single cause they support is education – and within this category, it is particularly higher education that gets their backing.
It helps to explain how Harvard’s fundraising drive could set an eye-watering target of $6.5bn (£4bn).
Billionaires are increasingly concentrated in a few global cities, such as London, Moscow and New York
The study shows a pattern of wealth being concentrated in a small number of places. More than 40% of billionaires in Europe live in just 10 cities, headed by Moscow and London. Globally the biggest city for billionaires is New York.
It also creates some jarring contrasts. Nigeria has become the country with the most number of children without access to any education – while this report shows that Nigeria is on course to have the most billionaires in Africa.
There have been repeated international studies from organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development showing that going to university remains a strong investment in terms of improving the chance of a higher-income job.
Such studies have rejected the idea that not going to university could be a smarter move or that the value of a degree will fall below the cost of tuition.
But Frank Furedi, author, social commentator and former professor of sociology, says that one of the “big secrets” of the expansion of higher education has been a growing gap between the most prestigious universities and the rest.
“The hierarchy has become more fixed,” says Prof Furedi.
These top universities have become the place where “global players gather”.
He says there has always been a tension between universities promoting social mobility and being the route for handing on advantage to the next generation.
“Education has always been contradictory, it’s the way that some people make their way up and it’s the way of consolidating privilege.”
Gov Fayose Threatens Nigeria Again At Campaign; Says If Jonathan Loses “Dokubo/Tompolo” Will Strike Economy
Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, yesterday employed the strategy of threats and fear-mongering to force the people of the state to vote for president Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election..
Speaking at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), rally in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, Fayose said:
“Minority must be given freedom in Nigeria. They have to be given recognition and that is why Jonathan must complete his eight years. You know when the Niger Delta people strike, you can imagine the effects on the economy of the country,” Fayose told the massive crowd of supporters.
He repeated the claims he made last week, that Buhari was weak, and just a candidate of Bola Tinubu.
“Buhari is the candidate of Ahmed Bola Tinubu and not the candidate of the North as being claimed by APC. Anybody who wants to rule must have the requirement. Let Gen Buhari flaunt his certificates. They want to foist a weak president on Nigeria, so that they can corner us the way they are cornering Lagos State,” said the governor.
Gov. Fayose flaunted his certificates to the mammoth crowd and dared Buhari to produce his own. Fayose has been criticised in the past as well of not having attended school.
After displaying his certificate, he told the crowd to reject any president without sound education and health to drive the economy of the country better than what President Jonathan has offered.
On the criticisms against the president about his alleged inability to fight corruption, Gov. Fayose said, “The power of the President stops when the suspect is arrested. But anytime he is in the court, he cannot interfere in the judiciary because it has to be independent. Corruption has been endemic in Nigeria before Jonathan came on board. Corruption is like terrorism . It will be wrong for anyone to accuse President Jonathan of not confronting corruption, when it is our collective responsibility to do this with our patriotic zeal.”

Getting pregnant the second time may be harder
For
many women, getting pregnant for the first time may not be difficult.
As such, they usually become worried if they can’t achieve the same feat
when they start nursing the idea of another baby.
Experts say many things are responsible. You may want to examine them.
According to obstetrics-gynaecologist
Alyssa Dweck, inability to get pregnant for the second time is one
problem plenty of women face.
Secondary infertility – a.k.a. trouble
conceiving the second time around when you had no issues with the first
pregnancy – is more common than primary infertility in women, she says.
Here are a few reasons why you might be seeing the delay and what to do
to speed things along.
Age: Obviously, time
will have passed between trying to get pregnant the first and second
time, and Dweck says that when it comes to trying to conceive, time is
on none of our sides.
“Starting from age 32, fertility begins
to decline slightly, then more rapidly by 35,” she says. “At 40, it
takes a plunge.” Additionally, with age come certain chronic illnesses
that may have gone unnoticed in the previous pregnancy, such as diabetes
or thyroid issues, both of which decrease chances of pregnancy.
Weight fluctuations: Whether
you packed on the pounds after your first pregnancy or overworked
yourself to drop the baby weight and more, drastic weight gain or loss
may mess with your hormones – and your pregnancy attempts. Now, more
than ever, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial to your chances of
conceiving.
Bedroom behaviour changes: You
may feel like you’re having a ton of sex when you’re actively trying to
get pregnant, but there’s a good chance you’re still having less than
you did before your first pregnancy. Between having a child at home,
time constraints, and fatigue, the numbers might not stack up the way
they did when you had an active, child-free sex life. Dweck’s solution?
Make having more sex a priority, even if you think you’re having enough.
Stress: People express
their frustration when a second pregnancy is proving so difficult
despite the fact that they are actively trying, whereas the first baby
wasn’t the product of a strict plan. Turns out, trying too hard to get
pregnant can kill your chances, due to the mental stress that comes with
putting pressure on yourself.
“When your stress level is high, your
body goes on high alert to prevent you from getting pregnant under
stressful circumstances,” says Dweck; noting that meditation and
relaxation exercises have been shown to increase fertility.
First pregnancy complications:
For example, if you had a C-section delivery with your first child,
there’s a chance that some fertility-interfering scar tissue could have
developed inside the uterus or outside in the pelvis, says Dweck.
Secondary infertility: This
is, unfortunately, pretty common. The best way you can find out if
there’s a problem or not is by charting regularly and timing intercourse
around ovulation. Also, don’t rule out your partner just because you’ve
had one child. A patient conceived the first child without even trying,
and they were sexually active for more than two years before they
decided to see the doctor. It turned out the couple both had issues,
which they only discovered after two years of trying and many tests.
Specialists treat secondary infertility
very differently to primary infertility. This is because the couples
have already proved everything works; therefore, we have to look at
what’s happened to make it more difficult this time around.
Normally, with baby number one, we say
you should be trying for about a year before seeking help; but if number
two has not happened after six months of trying, we recommend taking
action.
Therefore, be aggressive and ask questions from your doctor if it’s something you’re concerned about.
Marginal fertility: Occasionally,
parents can’t conceive again because they’ve been marginally fertile
all along and were simply lucky before. And some couples fall into the
frustrating category of “unexplained infertility.” Fortunately, this is a
rare diagnosis among those with kids.
“If a couple was able to get pregnant
before, in most cases, something specific must have changed,” says A.F.
Haney, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the University
of Chicago School of Medicine.
Indeed, one of the best-kept secrets of
the fertility industry is that nearly a quarter of couples seeking
treatment are already parents. Some of these patients had trouble
conceiving the first time, so they know what they’re up against when
they try again. But many others have been stunned to learn that in
fertility, past success is no guarantee of future success, as Michael
DiMattina, M.D., Director of Dominion Fertility and Endocrinology, in
Arlington, Virginia, puts it.
Yet, according to Dr. DiMattina, people
suffering secondary infertility are only half as likely to seek
treatment as those facing primary infertility. Partly, Dr. DiMattina
says, this reluctance stems from emotional denial. “Previously fertile
people tend to think, ‘If I just give up coffee or reduce my stress, it
will happen.’”
Though such measures undoubtedly enhance
general health, he says, “they won’t cure infertility.” To complicate
matters, busy obstetrics-gynaecologists often assume there’s no medical
reason when patients who have previously demonstrated their fertility
take an unusually long time to conceive. Unfortunately, such a
wait-and-see approach can allow an untreated problem to become an
untreatable one.
When to see your doctor: So, your diet
and exercise, sex life, and stress levels are all in check, and you’re
still not seeing that little plus sign? If it’s been more than six
months, especially if you’re over 35, don’t be afraid to ask for help,
says Dweck. “You won’t be the first person to go see their gynaecologist
to get some assistance in getting pregnant a second time.”
AYC: Man City stop Iheanacho, Nwakali
English
Premier League champions Manchester City have informed the Nigeria
Football Federation that they will not release Kelechi Iheanacho and
Chidiebere Nwakali for the 2015 African Youth Championship in March in
Senegal.
Both players were among nine foreign-based pros called up by the Flying Eagles for the AYC.
The players were given a Thursday deadline to join up with the country’s U20s in their training camp in Kaduna.
But in a mail signed by City scouting and
recruitment operations manager, Fergal Harkin, the EPL side said
Iheanacho was injured and may not be fit till mid-March, while Nwakali
is about to be loaned out to a club in Europe.
“With regards Kelechi Iheanacho, he is
currently injured. We believe he will be fit around the middle of March
but can keep in contract regarding his recovery,” read Tuesday’s mail to
the NFF in part.
“For Chidiebere Nwakali, we are currently
in the process of agreeing his loan deal to Europe and he will not be
available to meet up with the national team until further notice.
“At this moment in time, we feel it is best for his development that he cements his place in the club side.”
Under FIFA rules, Man City are not obliged to release the players as the competition is an age-grade event.
Meanwhile, the Flying Eagles will take on
Nigeria National League side Spotlight of Katsina in another test game
on Wednesday. The match will be played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in
Kaduna with the kick-off fixed for 11am.
Spotlight, who have defender Mustapha
Abdullahi with the Nigeria U20 side, are gearing up for promotion to the
Nigeria top flight in the forthcoming season.
The Katsina club, who placed 10th on the
Nigeria National League Division A table, have made several top signings
to match their ambitions.
Spotlight have been on a pre-season
training tour of Kaduna and have so far won three and drawn three of
their matches. Their own loss thus far was to Jamba Aacdemy, who beat
them 2-1.
The Flying Eagles, who are getting set
for the 2015 African Youth Championship in Senegal in March, are also
likely to battle league champions Kano Pillars by the weekend also in
Kaduna.
The Nigeria U20s are also billed to
feature in an expanded Super 4 tournament in Abuja, which will begin
next week. The other teams for the tourney are Nigeria U23 team,
Pillars, Enyimba, Dolphin and Warri Wolves.
The Nigerian clubs are preparing for CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup matches in February.
Messi admits he could leave Barcelona
Lionel
Messi saw arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo beat him to the Ballon d’Or in
Zurich and then reignited speculation over his own future by saying, “I
don’t know where I’ll be next year.”
Barcelona and Argentina superstar Messi
appeared to row back on his own comments made 24 hours earlier that
rumours that he could leave the Camp Nou for Chelsea or Manchester City
were “all lies”, reports AFP.
“I always said that I would finish my
career at Barcelona and then at (his home town club in Argentina)
Newell’s,” Messi told reporters after Real Madrid’s Portuguese icon
Ronaldo lifted the world footballer of the year title for the second
year in succession at Monday’s glittering FIFA awards ceremony.
“But I don’t know where I’ll be next year.
“As Cristiano (Ronaldo) said recently,
football has many twists and anything can happen,” added the Barca
talisman, who himself won the Ballon d’Or four years in a row from 2009.
After a superb performance in Barcelona’s
3-1 win over Spanish champions Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Messi had
angrily dismissed talk that he wanted to leave after clashing with
Barca’s manager Luis Enrique and the club’s board.
“I have never demanded anything to ensure that I stay because I never had any intention of leaving,” he told Barca TV after the match.
Messi’s relationship with Enrique had
come under scrutiny after the forward was benched for the 1-0 defeat at
Real Sociedad a week earlier. The rumours grew after Messi missed the
first training session after that match, citing a stomach bug.
“I have heard it said that my dad has
spoken to Chelsea or Manchester City. It is all lies. I have taken this
chance to deny it so that everyone knows the truth,” Messi said Sunday.
But his latest comments are sure to regenerate interest from a number of cash-rich English Premier League clubs.
Manchester United are reportedly one of
the few that could afford the buyout fee from his contract, reportedly
set at 250 million euros (195 million pounds, $296 million), without
falling foul of UEFA’s financial fair play rules.
With Messi commanding a reported salary
in the region of 20 million euros a year the total cost of acquiring his
services on a five-year deal could be a world record-shattering 350
million euros.
2015 Ford Mustang coming to Nigeria
For
glamorous automobile lovers, 2015 may be starting on an explosive note
as one of the world’s most iconic cars, Ford Mustang, is set to roar
into the Nigeria market with two powerful engines.
This is the first time the Mustang is
being introduced to Nigeria, says a report by Coscharis Motors, a
co-exclusive franchise holder for the Ford brand of vehicles in Nigeria.
“Coscharis Motors is set to introduce the
all new Ford Mustang into the Nigerian market for the first time ever.
This follows the successful introduction of the Ford Ecosport, Fusion,
Edge and Flex variants by the company,” it stated.
The Mustang is an American elegant automobile described as the heart and soul of Ford.
The Vice President, Ford Global Product
Development, Mr. Raj Nair, said, “Ford Mustang inspires passion like no
other car. The visceral look, sound and performance of Mustang resonates
with people, even if they’ve never driven one. Mustang is definitely
more than just a car – it is the heart and soul of Ford.”
According to the Coscharis’ Group
Managing Director, Mr. Josiah Samuel, the Mustang will be available
before the end of this first quarter.
“We believe the Mustang is a must have
among all lovers of premium automobile in Nigeria. In line with our
vision statement, our focus is always to remain timeless in our
relevance to automobile consumers,” he said.
Engine performance
Having made thousands of appearances in
film, television, music and video games, it is easily known as the
world’s most-liked vehicle on Facebook.
According to the manufacturer, the
vehicle’s impact goes beyond the over, nine million cars sold in its 50
years of continuous production.
It is loaded with innovative technologies and delivers high levels of performance and style.
Although, three engine options are
available in the new Mustang — 3.7 litres V6, 2.3 litres EcoBoost and
five litres V8, only the last two will be sold in Nigeria as confirmed
by Coscharis.
Both engines are mated to either a
six-speed manual or the optional SelectShift automatic transmission with
Steering Wheel Paddle Shifters and Remote Start System.
The Mustang’s EcoBoost engine uses direct
injection, variable cam timing and turbocharging to deliver plenty of
usable performance across a broad rev range.
Coscharis also says, “On a twisty back
road or a weekend track day, the driver can tap the toggle switches on
the console to quickly adjust steering effort, engine response, and
transmission and electronic stability control settings using the
available Selectable Drive Modes to create the perfect Mustang at any
time.
“The advanced new Ford-developed
stability control system is tuned to maximise Mustang’s dynamic
capabilities. When the time comes to turn up the wick at the track,
Mustang GT includes standard launch control on manual-transmission
models that enables drivers to achieve smooth, consistent starts every
time.”
Exterior
Ford says the 2015 model design of both
the Ford Mustang Fastback and Convertible retains the key design
elements of the Mustang brand, which will make an unforgettable
impression on those who have never experienced the astonishing car.
It gives its key external features as a
reduced roof height; widened body and widened rear track, which
contribute to its low and wide stance; a new front fascia that flows
into taut bodylines; a sleeker profile on Mustang Fastback, which
features a steeply raked windshield and rear glass; and a new execution
of the signature shark-nose front fascia with trapezoidal grille.
It also has high-intensity discharge
headlamps with Led signature lighting; a unified side glass;
three-dimensional, tri-bar tail-lamps with Led sequential turn signals.
Interior
The new Mustang has an aviation-inspired cockpit and a level of craftsmanship that celebrates its true heritage.
Its key interior features are a classic
twin-eyebrow instrument panel; a chrome-accent instrument cluster that
features two large, round gauges separated by 4.2-inch colour screen;
unique dash panel badge with the galloping pony logo and the words
“Mustang-Since 1964”
It has Recaro sport bucket seats, heated
and cooled front seats, manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel, new
centre console and sunglasses storage bin.
New technology
The all-new Mustang features a
significant amount of innovative technologies providing drivers with
enhanced information, control and connectivity.
It is equipped with features such as intelligent access with push-button start, SYNC and MyKey, standard Track Apps.
Buhari Can’t Be President Because He’s Not Computer Literate – Mimiko
The South West zonal coordinator of President Goodluck Campaign Organisation, Olusegun Mimiko, on Monday, said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Muhammadu Buhari, cannot be president of the country because he is a computer illiterate.
Addressing supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the party’s presidential campaign rally in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Mr. Mimiko, who is also the governor of Ondo State, said Nigerians were looking for a well-educated president who would drive development in the country.
“They don’t belong to this generation. Some of them cannot even click a computer yet they want to be president in Nigeria in 21st century. We say no. we say no, I don’t have much to say. We want a 21st century compliant president,” he said as the crowd cheered.
Mr. Jonathan, while addressing supporters in Enugu last Friday, said Mr. Buhari, who is 72 years old, could not remember his telephone number.
The president’s campaign Director General, Ahmadu Ali, had also described the APC candidate as “septuagenarian with fossilised ideas”. That was a few weeks after he likened the former head of state to an old plane.
Switching to Yoruba language, Mr. Mimiko, who returned to the PDP few months ago from Labour Party, LP, said Mr. Buhari did nothing for the Yoruba when he was head of state between 1983 and 1985, beyond jailing some of its leaders.
“Some violent politicians are claiming ownership of South West but I do tell them that such ownership does not extend to Oyo State.
“Have you seen how massive we are? They say they want to rule you again. Ask them what they did for Nigeria, for the youth, for women, when they were there.
“The only thing he did was locking up their leaders like Adekunle Ajasin and Chief Olabisi Onabanjo for 300 years. Is that what you want?”
The governor insisted that the next president must be well educated, stressing, “We don’t want those that should have retired to play with their grand children at home to be our leaders.”
Also speaking at the rally, the National Chairman of the PDP, Adamu Mu’azu, asked the people of the South west to vote for Mr. Jonathan because he is young and can deliver his promises.
He said, “Why you should vote for the president. Our president is a very young, energetic and humble president. Number two, your gubernatorial candidate (Teslim Folarin) is young. Am I (Mu’azu) not young and energetic? Our president did his NYSC in Oyo State.”
“Therefore the party that belongs to the younger generation of Nigeria is the PDP and our president is your president. He is humble and educated president.
The party’s governorship candidate in Oyo State, Teslim Folarin canvassed the creation of another state from the state, saying “The issue of state creation is kind of obsession to us. If we lose this opportunity we may not have it again in 50 years.”
Army To Dismiss Detained Soldiers Who Were Awaiting Court-Martial
We have learned that numerous soldiers who
were being held in detention at a cantonment in Jos, capital of Plateau
State, as they awaited court marshal have been re-posted to their
respective former barracks for dismissal.
The soldiers, from 213 battalion, 234 battalion, Army headquarters Team A and Task Force Mike, were deployed at the Adamawa axis of Operation Zamani Lafiya during a two-day attack by Islamist insurgents on Mubi town, Adamawa State on October 28 and 29. Military authorities felt that the soldiers, numbering about 2,000, had abandoned orders to fight. Our sources said the soldiers’ respective commanding officers had been instructed to dismiss them.
One of the dismissed soldiers, Bidemi Busari, who is female, said that they were not given fair hearing. She said she and other female soldiers originally posted to 234 battalion in Mubi were redeployed to the 23rd Brigade headquarters in Yola, the capital of Adamawa. She added that they were not part of the troops dislodged from Mubi when Boko Haram insurgents attacked the town on October 29, 2014. She wondered why she had to be dismissed.
Another source quoted the commanding officer (CO) of the 82 Infantry battalion, who dismissed one of the soldiers, as stating that the dismissal order came directly from the Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Kenneth Minimah. The soldier said the CO disclosed that he had orders to dismiss all returning soldiers.
Another source said the garrison commander of the 3rd Division dismissed close to 100 soldiers, disclosing that he was acting on a “directive from above.” One of the dismissed soldiers, Staff Sergeant Richard Madyewula, said he was not given any chance to explain himself during the process. He said he was just declared guilty and dismissed. In a statement he wrote and submitted to Colonel A.O.D. Okoro, 3rd Division military police commander, the staff sergeant said he was deployed at Burnt Bricks, Mubi (Bravo Company located at the 234th battalion in Mubi, adding that he was not at the battalion headquarters on the day of the insurgents’ assaults. “On 29th of Oct. 2014, I started hearing sporadic gunshots which of course I [knew was] a repel fire against approaching enemies. The firing was heard from inside Mubi town, so my officer-in-charge Major P.O. Mukoro immediately moved with one platoon of soldiers in the only available utility vehicle to beef up the strength of soldiers deployed at the entrance of Mubi town popularly known as “Welcome to Mubi”. On reaching there he discovered that the insurgents had blockaded the checkpoint and were already exchanging fire inside the base camp (234 battalion headquarters). So he called me as the most senior man in that location (Burnt Bricks) and asked me to move the men to join up with the battalion headquarters. Since we were moving about 16 kilometers distance on foot, we didn’t reach there before he called me again to move the men to Mahia local government, that the battalion headquarters in Mubi had been over-run. All these instructions I followed strictly. So I don’t know why the Army [would] charge me with the statement offense [of disobedience] to [a] particular order and dismiss me.”
