Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State has said the Igbo are allies of the Ijaw in the national politics of Nigeria.
He stated this on Wednesday when the
leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo in the state conferred the chieftain title
of ‘Ekwueme I of Bayelsa State’ on him at Government House,Yenagoa,
according to a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel
Iworiso-Markson.
Dickson also received a staff of office from the Igbo community in the state.
He expressed gratitude to Ndigbo for
their show of support and solidarity to the Ijaw nation especially when
it mattered most during the 2015 presidential election in which former President Goodluck Jonathan was defeated by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Through you, I want to appreciate the
entire Ndigbo in Nigeria and in the diaspora for standing by the Ijaw
nation through thick and thin, particularly for giving us the solid
support when we needed it most”, h e said.
The governor commended them for their contribution to the state’s economy.
He promised to set aside a date for a special rally to enable the Igbo community publicly demonstrate support for his government in view of their voting strength ahead of the December 5 governorship election in the state.
He assured the Igbo community that his
administration would work assiduously to secure a more peaceful
environment for their businesses to flourish.
He promised to consolidate on the
achievements he had recorded in the maintenance of law and order to
bring about development, peace and prosperity when re-elected.
He called on them to come out in their numbers to vote for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the poll.
Dickson used the occasion of the ceremony
to congratulate them on their successful celebration of the 2015
edition of the Igbo Day in the state, urging them to continue to conduct
themselves peacefully.
He said, “Let me also thank you for your resolution yesterday (Tuesday), endorsing me and my deputy for a second term.
“That shows your strong resolve to continue to support and vote for the PDP in the next governorship election.
“You are the single largest
non-indigenous community in this state. So, if all of you as united and
well-organized as you are vote for the PDP, then it would contribute to
the landslide victory that we are already working for.”
In his remarks, the Igwe- in-Council,
Ohaneze Ndigbo in Bayelsa, Anthony Uwakwe, explained that the
chieftaincy title was bestowed on Governor Dickson in recognition of his
pragmatic leadership style.
Uwakwe, who performed the conferment of
the chieftaincy title on Governor Dickson, stated that the governor had
made tremendous achievements in the last three and half years.
