If I Have Another Opportunity I Will Rob The Same Bank, They Are Careless – Ex-Convict

If I Have Another Opportunity I Will Rob The Same Bank, They Are Careless – Ex-Convict

business
A 27-year-old robbery suspect, Abdulhameed Ibrahim, who was reportedly arrested after a CCTV footage in a bank in Ogudu, Lagos state revealed his stealing activities in the bank, has confessed how he raided banks, stole huge amount of money which he used to invest in cocaine business.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspect on Wednesday before newsmen, said Ibrahim was caught after he stole N1.5 million from a new generation bank, located at Ogudu.

Owoseni added that Ibrahim was an ‘unrepentant and remorseless robber who had served jail terms in Plateau and Kaduna states for a similar offence.’
“He was arrested after CCTV footage in the bank showed him stealing the money in one of his exploits,” the CP noted.

Ibrahim, confessing before newsmen, said he was a graduate of the University of Medina, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a former staff of the Saudi Arabia Embassy but was deported from Saudi Arabia in 2011.

He explained that he only stole money from careless banks and cashiers and had invested the money by buying cocaine which he subsequently sells in Abuja.

“I have made over N20 million since I started stealing in banks. I started the operation last month when I came to Lagos from Plateau State.
“I used the money I got from the bank to buy cocaine. I sell the cocaine in Abuja. I made double the price I bought the drug.

“Before I go into the bank, I have a friend called Segun; who prepares the ground for me with the assistance of an insider in the bank.

“On this particular occasion, I went into the bank to deposit money in the bulk room. When I got there, I discovered some amount of money was carelessly placed on the counter. I smartly took it without the female cashier seeing me. She was engrossed in a novel she was reading.

“I walked out of the bulk room and nobody stopped me. I got home and counted the money; it was N1.5 million.

“The personnel of the internal security of that bank just don’t understand their job. The bank where I stole the money is careless. They display their money without minding who comes into the banking hall.
I have studied those at the bank; if I had another opportunity, I would love to go to the same bank branch to steal. They are careless.”

When asked why he chose to invest the stolen money on drugs, he said, “I love hard drugs. Since I came back to Nigeria, I’ve been into this act of stealing to sustain my drug life. Police in Lagos have stopped my activities.

“I was called through the hotel intercom that I have a visitor. When the policeman spoke to me through the intercom, I immediately sensed he was a policeman.

“I came out and surrendered myself. I knew I had come to the end of the road,” Ibrahim added.

The CP, however, said the suspect was arrested with items including dollar notes, white powdery substances suspected to be cocaine and some mobile phones.

“The suspect will be charged to court soon.”

I’m prosecuted for objecting a Muslim-Muslim ticket – Saraki

Senator Bukola Saraki in the dock
Senator Bukola Saraki in the dock
Nigeria’s senate president, Bukola Saraki has opened the lid on why he is being prosecuted by some persons in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Saraki who refrained from mentioning any name claims that because he objected to the aspiration of some persons to be running mate to Buhari in the run up to the 2015 general election, he is being prosecuted.
Responding to an open letter by Dele Momodu, Saraki wrote on his ongoing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal, stressing that, it is not a corruption matter as many have come to realise.
On the issue of a Muslim-Muslim ticket he said: “I have also been accused of helping to frustrate some people’s opportunity to emerge as President Muhammadu Buhari’s running mate. But I have no problem with anybody. My concern was that it would not be politically smart of us to run with a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
READ: I never struck a deal with PDP to be senate president, says Saraki
“I doubt if we would have won the election if we had done this, especially after the PDP had successfully framed us a Muslim party. I felt we were no longer in 1993.”
“Perhaps, more than ever before, Nigerians are more sensitive to issues of religious balancing. This, my brother, was my original sin,” he said.
READ: Why I fell out with President Jonathan – Saraki
Adding that, “What they say to themselves, among other things, was that if he could conspire against our ambition, then he must not realize his own ambition as well. For me however, I have no regrets about this. I only stood for what I believed was in the best interest of the party and in the best interest of Nigeria.”
It would be recalled that following Muhammadu Buhari’s emergence as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the battle for who will be his running mate was a hot topic among party leaders.
Many reports claimed that former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, a Muslim had insisted on being Buhari’s running mate but was vehemently opposed by many including Saraki.

Linda Ikeji is no longer an inspiration - Jola Sotubo

Linda Ikeji is no longer an inspiration - Jola Sotubo

blog
Journalist and Pulse writer, Jola Sotubo has penned down her thoughts on the Linda Ikeji versus Wizkid saga. Every Nigerian knows Linda Ikeji’s story, how she came up from nothing and became one of the richest young women in the country. Linda epitomizes hard work and persistence and shows that determination is the key to success. This used to be enough to make her an inspiring person, but it isn’t anymore.

Linda Ikeji’s fame and wealth have increased in great proportions over the past five years, but she has wasted so many opportunities to make real impact that I wonder if her good fortune has taught her anything.

The only thing Linda seems to have acquired with her position is money, possessions and a growing sense of vanity.

The average Nigerian might think being rich is the be–all and end–all of life, but a person whose only boast is in money is as poor as poor can get.

Why doesn’t Linda Ikeji have a degree in online journalism? Why does she insist on using that terrible blog theme despite having her own website? Why hasn’t Linda Ikeji improved? Linda why are you so afraid of growth?

Why is Linda Ikeji not giving speeches around the world? Why doesn’t Linda Ikeji have any endorsement deals? Why is Linda not hosting any TV shows?
Why isn’t Linda on radio? Why wasn’t Linda at the recent dinner with International Monetary Fund (IMF) boss, Christine Lagarde along with Genevieve Nnaji who she’s more famous than?

Why does Linda Ikeji insist on making safe and passé fashion choices? Linda why are you still matching clothes and shoes in 2016? Why do you always wear the same hair? Why are you not killing it on every red carpet possible? Why don’t you attend events? Linda what are you so afraid of?

Linda why are you still spending so much time blogging? Why can’t you pay others to do the work so you can move on to bigger and better things? I don’t know if anyone has told you yet, but there’s nothing special about that blog, it was just your vehicle to the top.
You’re the one who’s special and you can transfer that specialness into other things. It’s time to jump out of that vehicle and make a real difference.

Dear Linda Ikeji, you’re already one of the most disliked women in Nigeria, why the heck are you not milking it? You write about Kim Kardashian all the time but have learnt nothing from her.
If people are going to dislike you anyway, you better give them a reason that pays you, one that doesn’t only involve your computer.

Dear Linda, it’s also time to tone down on the vanity. You were worth something before the bags and the shoes, yes even before that house. Maybe it’s time to look within and find your true purpose, find meaning outside all the retail therapy that is just a sign of growing emptiness.

You should know better than to lose your head over claims that your bag is fake. You should know better than to announce that you’re “too rich to buy fake” or say that you’re “laughing in your Banana Island mansion” or that your “bag is worth more than your haters’ cars.” That is so unbelievably shallow.

Dear Linda Ikeji, you have lost almost all your goodwill, you do not need to be hated by everyone to know that you’re successful. You should be envied, resented even, but not downright detested.
The people who hate you were created by the same God who blessed you. There’s too much negative energy around you. You need to check yourself.

Dear Linda, you should go down in history as one of the most influential Nigerians in history, but will you? When your blog fades away, and I say when because it will, will you still mean anything, will you still be somebody?

Dear Linda, you have so much power at your disposal. You have the power to influence minds and inspire generations, when are you going to start using it? When are you going to step out of the box you’ve built for yourself, when are you going to step out of your Banana Island box?

I know that a lot of people who read this will say that I’m a “hater” and remind me that you’re smiling to the bank. Maybe some of them will ask me if I’ve eaten today, in fact I have not. But the truth must be told and as long as it is the truth, it doesn’t matter who the messenger is.

Dear Linda Ikeji, stop wasting your opportunities and start growing. You’ve been on the same spot for too long and if you don’t innovate, you will fade away and quickly too.

Dear Linda Ikeji, you used to be an inspiration, you used to encourage people to do great things, what happened to you?

He Always Uses Aboniki And Dusting Powder As Lubricants: Hubby And Wifey Take Their s3x Life Drama To Court

court
One Solomon Acchoyame has been dragged before an Igando Customary Court in Lagos State, by his wife, Omolara Acchoyame, who is alleging that he tortures her by applying hot ointments on his manhood while having sex with her. The 43-year-old housewife on Tuesday sought for the dissolution of her marriage, alleging that her husband exhibited strange behaviours while making love to her.

Speaking before the Court President, Adegboyega Omilola, Omolara, said her 44-year-old husband usually waited for her to sleep, then without waking her up, just opens her clothes and had sex with her, adding that she never enjoyed this.

“My husband has three hot ointments which he used during sex for lubrication,” the embattled woman said, listing them as aboniki balm, mentholatum and dusting powder.

“These things made me hate having sex with him.

“I met my husband 14 years ago and bore him three children and apart from his torturous sexual escapade, our major quarrel has been based on the fact that I didn’t know what he does for a living.

“We fought most times before I left home because I don’t know what he does for a living.

“He goes to his village three times a week and I don’t know the reason for this since his parents are dead and when he comes back, he would say he does not have any money.

“I would go to my sister to borrow money for him for his next trip. Yet, he will come back and curse me and my family and he doesn’t come home until midnight.

“My husband does nothing for a living. Please dissolve the marriage so that I can start my life all over again,” the mother of three begged the court.

Acchoyame, in his defense, stated that when he met his wife at the University College Hospital, UCH, in Ibadan, things were going on well for him and it was with his money that he trained her in the university.

“After a while, I started experiencing financial difficulties and I couldn’t complete my own education.

“I want to perform my obligations as a father and husband, but I am handicapped,” he said, denying claims that he ever tortured her during sex using those ‘hot’ balms.

Omilola, after listening to both parties, adjourned the matter till April 21 for trial.

Witness against Saraki admits to errors in investigation - Report

Witness against Saraki admits to errors in investigation - Report

Report sent in by witnesses at the on-going Saraki trial at CCT. Read below...
Prosecution Witness 1, in the Code of Conduct Tribunal’s (CCT) trial against the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, today admitted that Dr. Saraki was not interrogated by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), in-line with the procedures established by the laws that institute the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal.
Answering questions on cross-examination by Saraki’s counsel,Paul Usoro (SAN), Michael Wetkas, the first witness, who is also an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, maintained that the Senate President was never given an opportunity to confirm nor deny the allegations against him by the CCB, because it was the EFCC that had conducted the investigations relating to the claims, not the CCB.

This revelation, raises new contentions, as the precedent clause in Section 3D of the of the CCT Act, clearly states that all cases at the CCT are dependent on the fact that “the person concerned makes a written admission of such breach or noncompliance, no reference to the Tribunal shall be necessary.”

Many will recall that the Senate President stated at the commencement of the CCT proceedings that his fundamental rights based on the precedent clause of the CCT Act were abused.

In 2011, former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had his case dismissed, as the tribunal had also failed to allow him to confirm or deny the allegations brought against him by the CCB.

However, when Saraki’s lawyers filed a similar motion, Justice Umar, who gave the ruling in Tinubu’s case, stated that he had made the ruling in Tinubu’s case in error.

Meanwhile, the CCT boss has also ordered that all other cases at the CCT be stood down till further notice, as Saraki’s trial must proceed day to day until the end of the proceedings.

This ruling has raised eyebrows, as the tribunal currently has other cases to adjudicate, making many observers to ask if there is truly a timeline - as some say - to convict the Senate President using the CCT.

Mixed race beauty had killer response for man who suggested she bleach her skin to look whiter and prettier

Mixed race beauty had killer response for man who suggested she bleach her skin to look whiter and prettier

You know that moment when random people who should be on their best behaviour while trying to snag a date behave like inappropriately? 22-year-old Takara Allen had one such moment. She shared a screenshot of a conversation with her Tinder date who suggested she bleach her skin so as to look whiter and prettier.

The make-up artist, who lives in Adelaide, Australia, says she was left 'devastated' after being told she would look so much prettier if she was whiter.

After sharing the exchange, Takara vented her outrage in a long post on Facebook.
She wrote: 'What goes on in people's heads that makes them think this is okay to say to someone?
'As if people of colour don't already struggle enough with the pressure to conform to Eurocentric beauty ideals and standards, people like this add even more.'
Takara also ridiculed the man's claim that he didn't mean to cause her offence.
'How the F*** is this not offensive in your head?!' she wrote. 'Like literally how can you come to the conclusion that this is even true?
'I've grown up hearing "You'd be prettier if you were lighter" and "You're pretty for a black girl," as if black women are just generally unattractive, and so it's a surprise when one of us is.'
Takara addressed the Tinder message again in a message posted on her Facebook page yesterday.
She said: 'This is a huge issue we deal with when dating/navigating the world in general and the darker you are the worse it gets.
'Black people's beauty is tied directly to blackness. We are not beautiful *in spite* of being black but rather *because* we're black. Don't get it twisted.'

2 kids text 911 for help as their dad allegedly drives drunk

Two Nebraska children, 14 year old  Mackenzie and her 12 year old brother Ethan Behrens were on a road trip from Kearney to Colorado with their father, 44-year-old Jason Behrens, who appeared to be drunk. The children began texting 911 asking for help. They texted 911 to send a cop to stop their father from allegedly driving drunk in a rental car on March 25 and putting their lives at risk.

Mackenzie told NTV News:
“We told him many times, we don’t want to go anymore because you are really drunk and I don’t want to die,”
Allegedly ignoring his children’s pleas for him to stop the car, their dad kept driving on what would be a seven-hour drive, swerving as he drove.
“The next time he swerves, send the text,” Ethan said he told his sister.
“And he swerved again so I pushed send,” she added.

The children kept texting with a 911 operator, describing businesses they passed by so that police could find them.

The kids  were able to convince their dad to stop at a Burger King so they could eat - unbeknownst to him, the Police were already on their way to catch up with them.
When Police finally caught up to the family, they had Behrens take a breathalyzer test. His blood alcohol content was 0.224%, which was nearly three times the legal limit, police said.

He was arrested and charged with DUI, his second offense, and two counts of driving under the influence with a passenger under 16, officials said.

Their Mum is now fighting to get full custody of the kids. She said the kids don't want to be around their father anymore.

He is due court for his arraignment on April 27.

His parents Karriappa Naranal, 35, and wife Shridevi Naranal, 28, from Tavariyara village, in Karnataka, had been told a few days after he was born that there was no hope of treatment.
The couple visited a government hospital in Kustagi several times begging for help but after being continually turned away they lost all hope of ever finding a cure. Fortunately, a health care worker at a health camp suggested they traveled to a better hospital in Bangalore and get the baby checked.

Kariappa, who works as a daily wage laborer on construction sites and earns just about $1.50 per day said:
"Many doctors told me there was a 90 per cent chance my baby would die if he had surgery. Doctors said not to risk it because successful surgery was impossible.
"But then we got a ray of hope in Bangalore when a doctor said there was a 50-50 chance of survival so we went for it."
When Yamanoor was admitted to Sapthagiri Hospital, in Karnataka, Bangalore, last month, his cyst was 17 cm-20 cm in diameter, the same size as a baby’s head.

On March 27th a neurosurgeon at
Dr Hariprakash Chakravarthy, 38, a neurosurgeon at Sapthagiri Hospital, said: "This condition is born to those mothers who suffer a deficiency of folic acid.
This scan was taken of the tot after his surgery
"This deformity is known as occipital encephalocele, and happens when there’s a gap between two bones of the skull, and as the skull develops it grows into a bulge filled with fluid.
"We had very low expectation about the success of the surgery since a young baby cannot afford to lose a lot of blood. Even a 10 ml to 20 ml loss of blood can cause the heart to stop. When we cut the protruding part of the brain it resulted in some blood loss but thankfully nothing bad happened and the little baby survived."
Fortunately, the baby survived the surgery and  was finally discharged from hospital on Monday and is now at home recovering.

Kariappa is thankful that his son is in a good condition and on his way to a full recovery. He will be having another operation next month and will have a check up every three months.

U.S.-led coalition blows up $500 million in Islamic State cash and cuts its oil revenues

The U.S.-led coalition air campaign blew up about $500 million of the Islamic State’s cash and cut its oil revenues by about 50%, according to a senior US defense official.
An ISIS source who asked not to be named says The Islamic State has been forced to ration fuel in some areas and cut its fighters and government officials pay in regions it controls by half.

U.S. officials have said the air campaign combined with local ground forces in Iraq and Syria have dealt the Islamic State setbacks in recent months, saying the terror group has lost 40% of the territory it once controlled in Iraq. “We've got the momentum,” Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said.

The official added that the Islamic State is struggling to replace its fighters who are now being killed at a rate of 1,500 to 2,000 a month.

8 decisions by the NFF Technical and development Committee after extraordinary meeting

8 decisions by the NFF Technical and development Committee after extraordinary meeting

In view of the current struggles of the Nigeria Senior National Football team, qualification for the 2018 World Cup and other matters concerning Nigerian football,  the NFF Technical Committee held an extraordinary meeting in Abuja on Wednesday and made 8 decisions.
Read them after the cut as revealed on the NFF's official website...
In view of the upcoming international friendly matches involving the Super Eagles and Mali and Luxembourg in Europe, the Committee appointed Salisu Yusuf as interim Head Coach of the team, to be assisted by Imama Amapakabor (1st Assistant), Kennedy Boboye (2nd Assistant) and Alloy Agu (Goalkeeper Trainer). This is in line with the NFF Board’s resolve to encourage and expose indigenous Coaches who show undoubted ability and capacity. The National Technical Director, Shaibu Amodu will play supervisory role.

After the friendly matches, and before the 2018 FIFA World Cup group phase draw, the Technical Committee will initiate the process for the selection of a substantive technical crew for the Super Eagles, with a Head Coach. A small team of eminently –qualified persons with the required pedigree will take charge of the process, and the best candidate would be selected, irrespective of whether he is indigenous or expatriate.

Committee called on the NFF Board to give Coach Samson Siasia all the support towards Nigeria winning the gold medal of the men’s football tournament of this year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It noted that Siasia has been left out of the Super Eagles mix for now in order for him to fully concentrate on his very important assignment.

Committee also called on the NFF Board to give Coach Emmanuel Amuneke all the support as the U-20 National Team, Flying Eagles, begin the race for the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, Zambia 2017. The committee noted with delight that Amuneke has picked most of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup winners, which tallies with the vision of the present NFF administration for growth, continuity and seamless transition. It noted that Amuneke has been left out of the Super Eagles mix for now in order for him to fully concentrate on his equally important assignment.

The Committee congratulated the Super Falcons for the team’s qualification for the Africa Women Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2016, but observed that there is need for an overhaul of the team, particularly in certain playing positions. It therefore charged the technical crew headed by Florence Omagbemi to work assiduously towards re-engineering the squad before the finals in Cameroon.

With the draw for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, Papua New Guinea 2016 already conducted, and Nigeria’s Falconets set to confront Spain, Canada and Japan, the Committee called on Head Coach Peter Dedevbo to submit his programme for the World Cup in good time.

The Committee also called on the Head Coach of U-17 Women National Team, Bala Nikyu, to start working on his possible programme for the World Cup as there are only a few months after the Draw on 30th May and the kick –off of the tournament in September.

Committee approved the submission for a process to be initiated for the grading and certification of Nigerian coaches, beginning with the NFF C-License program in June 2016. This course would be conducted across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

Kennedy Boboye elated after NFF appoint him as Super Eagles coach for Intl friendly

Kennedy Boboye elated after NFF appoint him as Super Eagles coach for Intl friendly

Abia Warriors coach Kennedy Boboye has said he feels honoured to work as assistant coach of the Super Eagles.
On Wednesday,  the Nigeria Football Federation announced Salisu Tush as the new temporary head coach of the Super Eagles to be assisted by Imama Amapakabo and Kennedy Boboye , and the three coaches will take charge of the Super Eagles’ international friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg.
Boboye feels his appointment is as a result of his hardwork in the Nigerian Football league especially with Abia Warriors and says he will ensure the Super Eagles play attractive football.
“I feel honoured getting a chance to handle the Super Eagles – to be honest, it is a dream come true,” Boboye told Goal.
“This is a reward for my hardwork in the Nigeria Professional Football League and we pray for victory and the wherewithal to change the face of Nigerian football.
“With my coming on board with Imama [Amapakabo] and Salisu [Yusuf], we will ensure things work out and play attractive football.
“Our brand of football has to be offensive and also take the chances that come our way. We have been conceding goals in our recent international matches and that is not good for us too.
“We're going to work hard to be the best we can - that will make Nigerians happy and send a message that our appointment is not a fluke,” he concluded.

The Senate, CCT and the politics of Saraki’s trial By Reuben Abati

The Senate, CCT and the politics of Saraki’s trial By Reuben Abati

The present Senate serving the Nigerian people runs the risk of being remembered as the worst since 1999.  Public Relations Consultants and media officials of this particular Senate have done their part flooding both the print and the online media with details of how productive the Bukola Saraki-led Senate has been, and they have been quite aggressive in telling us about 30 important Bills which when passed, will change the face of Nigeria and deliver change.

The Senate according to one report has considered over 125 bills, debated over 48 motions, and passed three bills. But nobody is apparently impressed. During the Jonathan administration, the Senate was the better regarded of the two legislative chambers. While members of the House of Representatives in the Seventh Assembly behaved as if they were a band of students’ unionists, the then Red Chamber projected an image of maturity and temperance, even if it was also self-serving! With the 8th Assembly, the House of Representatives, apart from the shameful resort to physical combat over the distribution of “juicy” committees in November 2015, has shown itself to be better organized than the present Senate. The critical difference is that of leadership. It is one of management. It is a matter of weight and politics.

What is clear is that the leadership recruitment and selection process in the legislative arm of government is as critical as it is in any other sphere of government. During the 7th Assembly, the politics of the emergence of the then Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, a PDP lawmaker who became an agent and later, chieftain of the opposition party, ensured that the House remained almost permanently in a frosty relationship with the Executive. Likewise, the manner of Bukola Saraki’s emergence as Senate President, marked again by alleged disloyalty to his own party and collusion with the opposition for personal gains, has laid the foundation for the supremacy of intrigues, cabals, and the politics of mischief in a Chamber that should be devoted strictly to the making of laws for the good governance of Nigeria.

His colleague in the House of Representatives also emerged under controversial circumstances, but Yakubu Dogara’s politics seems to be better managed. Saraki’s politics is made more complex by the fact that he has strong roots in the two dominant parties in the National Assembly and has proven to be extremely influential across party lines, making him a dominant force in Nigeria’s current power equation, and most certainly, a threat to other power centres.

Online, the Saraki-led Senate claims that it has done a lot, even if it has spent more time being on vacation in less than a year, and obsessed daily with the politics of contradictions. The Senate President once reportedly boasted that the Senate under his watch has helped to block corruption by helping Nigeria to save money.  He talked about the Senate’s probe of the Treasury Single Account (TSA).  But now, here is the contradiction: Many Nigerians would find it difficult to see how a Senate whose leader is on trial for corruption-related matters, and that has chosen to buy for its members, luxury SUV vehicles at inflated cost can claim to be helping Nigerians at a time when the economy is on a tragic downward spiral, and yet the same Senators had allegedly collected vehicle loans. This has brought the Senate condemnation from both the Nigeria Labour Congress and a coalition of about 400 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).

But we know where the problem lies: politicians are always playing games, and the Senate under Bukola Saraki’s watch has acted more than once, as if it is against the people. This Senate has had to reverse itself thrice in the last one month following public outcry about its lack of moral rectitude. The painful reality is that the impression has now been created that the Senate as presently constituted is playing the politics of one man. It has reduced itself to a Saraki-must-stay-and-the-Executive-and-anti-Saraki-APC-leaders-must-bow-Red-Chamber. Most members of the House of Representatives have tactfully stayed away from this abuse of privilege and utter contempt for the original mandate of the National Assembly, but they need to be advised to also stay away from the kind of infectious madness that seems to be seizing hold of the Senate. It is a form of madness that encourages recourse to farce, burlesque and conspicuous acquisition.

Determined to show support for their embattled Senate President who is on trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), and whose name has also been mentioned in the Panama Papers scandal, many of the Senators abandoned the Senate Chambers and started following their boss to the Tribunal. On one occasion as many as close to 50 Senators abandoned their primary assignment and chose to go and play politics at the Tribunal.  If this seeming relocation of the Senate to the Code of Conduct Tribunal was meant to intimidate the presiding judge, His Lordship has refused to be intimidated, either by the crowd or the convoy of buses or the retinue of 90 defence lawyers.  He has now chosen to attend to the case on a daily basis. The number of Senators doing follow-follow has since reduced: it will of course, be absurd to shut down the entire Senate to embark on sycophantic frolic. Nonetheless, the Saraki case is taking its toll on the Senate. It has placed it on a collision course with a court of competent jurisdiction, with the Executive and also divided the ruling All Progressives Congress.

It has also led to a situation whereby the lawmakers even attempted to change the Code of Conduct Bureau Act in an obvious attempt to frustrate the Saraki trial.  In less than 48 hours, the amendment bill went through first and second readings. If there had been no public outcry, the lawmakers would have passed the bill in less than 72 hours.  It would have been the fastest piece of legislation ever, and yet it was meant to be self-serving: making a law to sabotage due process, even when they know that a law cannot have retroactive effect. When that failed, our Senators came up with the ingenious idea that the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal must appear before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions. An indignant crowd of civil society agitators also shut that down.  The Chairman of the CCT has also been a target of campaigns of calumny. Saraki’s supporters are throwing everything possible into this matter, where the legal process fails, the legislative process is deployed; when that also fails, an internet war, rallies, protests, all designed to win the public mind is launched.

Senate President Bukola Saraki may not have read Robert Greene’s The 48 Laws of Power, for he seems to have broken too many of those laws already; perhaps he has read The Art of War by Sun Tzu. He should have been told that to rush headlong into war without mastering the dynamics of power is costly. This is one bitter political lesson about the strategy of war that  Senator Saraki is currently learning.  But now that he has gone so deep into the battlefield, he may no longer be allowed to surrender or retreat, even as his troops are gradually fleeing. Saraki has stepped on the proverbial Banana peel; as he struggles for survival, our Senate, the people’s Senate, must not be allowed to fail as a public institution. Senator Saraki should step aside, for now, as Senate President. If he emerges victorious from his travails, his colleagues should do him the honour of reinstating him to that office of honour, without question. But if he loses, he should remember that war only offers two possibilities, and even when a warrior wins, there may still be dangers on the way back home. In all, the politics of Saraki’s trial should not consume the Senate, and indeed the 8th Assembly.
“So far, so good”, Saka Olawale wrote assessing the present Senate. I don’t think so. If anything, this Senate needs to be rescued. Whatever explanations our present set of Senators offers would be difficult to believe given the manner in which they have exposed their own limitations. The Senate cannot even keep documents. Copies of the 2016 Budget vanished from its custody. The copies when eventually found mutated into versions unknown to the Executive arm that presented the same Budget at an open ceremony.
For five months, the Senate is embroiled in a needless controversy over the content of the Budget. What is worse: In almost one year, no Senator can be quoted as having said anything engaging or profound. The only Senator who makes a serious effort to display some common sense is far more active on Twitter than on the floor of the Senate. The more prominent Senators are known for their rabid politicking or their wardrobe or exotic cars or the comedy that they provide. One of them even came up with a bill to gag free speech. It was in this same Senate that some male chauvinists declared that women cannot have any equal rights with men, and so a Gender Equality Bill is unacceptable.

They failed to realize that in the United States, whose Constitutional democracy we are copying, a woman is only a short distance away from emerging as Presidential candidate of the Democratic Party and as 45th President of the United States. I imagine many of them struggling to be photographed with the same woman if they are so privileged. Was it also not in this same Senate that a member argued that Nigerian lawmakers should only patronize Made-in-Nigeria-women? This was meant to be a “brilliant” contribution to a debate on the need to promote Made-in-Nigeria goods. How dumb! And this kindergarten level statement actually generated some debate!

Challenging as the democratic process may have been, Nigerians can still remember a few Senators of old who sat in that same Assembly and made impact with their interventions and insightful speeches. To now have a group of Senators who crack jokes, borrow their imageries from road side bars, embark on a frolic, or spend time on sycophantic exertions, and when called upon, prove annoyingly incapable of analyzing and interrogating policies and making solid contributions is sad. We expect this to change.
